Video Installation

Video Instillation

Video instillation is a contemporary art form that combines video technology with instillation art. Contemporary art is art made at the present period of time, and as Video installation uses projectors and screens it is classed as contemporary art.Video instillation art uses many things like projectors and lasers to map onto walls and other materials. Although projections don't have to be the main focus, sound can also be an important part, as sounds and ambiances can set the atmosphere.

This is a clip from 'Illuminating York' which is a festival which happens once a year. They project images onto buildings and make animations out of the art work. For example, this clip of patterns from various artists is being projected onto York crown court. The projection mapping makes it look like the building is moving and other content artists have created ( like patterns) need to fit the scale of the building. If the projection did not fit the scale of the building, it would not look as good and some of the effects and patterns might not work as well.

.

ANTIVJ

ANTIVJ is a group of people who use projection mapping to make things appear as though they are moving, but in other work that they have done, they have used lasers as well which when combined with mirrors, can give off a certain effect on which they can experiment on. Mecaniques Discursives is an installation project which took place in France at a theater, the ANTIVJ group did a projection video making one of the walls look as if the little people on the walls were moving. They also made some 3D effects, which made things like the clock hand come alive with realistic movement. They show this projection by filming the wall, which it is projected onto. Then tracking upwards till they can see the top of the projection.
They made this video by using quite a few different projectors that are projecting moving images on the wall, each projector has its own allocated space which it shines on too. They have tried to turn the boring stuff like cables and pipes that are on the walls and made them into more interesting things with random animations. To make these projections, they will have used projection mapping software e.g  MadMapper, Millumin, Resolume Arena 4 etc. This software is used to create all the little animations that are displayed on the wall. Each individual projector will have its own animations to play for the space it takes up.

ANTIVJ use very technical setups to get the effect they want, they use lots of projectors and in other videos use lasers and mirrors. Compared to other people who make video installation projects, their work is very complicated. For example 'Box' is a video made by The Creators Project, the video shows a blank screen which is being moved by a mechanical arm behind it,  they created an illusion on which someone looks like they are pushing it by them self. As the video goes on another screen comes in to play and then the projector projects animations of movement that the two screens both share, for example towards the end the two screens come together and makes what appears to be a box which the person walks into and then gets lifted up. So even though the end product for 'Box' looks more professional, they used less projectors than ANTIVJ did.

Personally i really like ANTIVJ's work, as they include good camera work as well as good projection mapping skills and and laser skills. For me this is important as you need to capture the audience into the illusions you are showing them, and if the camera work or projection mapping isn't good, then the audience wont be as entertained. Looking at their Vimeo page, there is a lot of good feedback from viewers wondering how they created it, this is a very positive thing leaving the viewers thinking about the projects as it makes them remember it compared to something that might not be as clever as theirs are. An example of this would be one viewer saying "Very very nice! What`s the technology behind the installation? Just 2 Beamers and semitransparent curtains?", it is clear that people enjoy watching these videos as if they were some sort of magic tricks.

PlayStation advertisements

Advert Concept

Initial ideas

1. The advert starts off with a scene of a forest, just looking at the trees and wild life. After this short clip ends, another clip starts but this time its game play footage of a forest, this clip follows the same movements as the clip in real life did. The rest of the advert goes back and forward from reality to gameplay. I like this idea because it shows how realistic some games can be, i show this by constantly switching back to real footage which i have mimicked from the game play footage. The advantages of this idea is that it can show the other side of gaming, which is that it doesn't all have to be gory first person shooters. The disadvantages of this would be how i film it, i would have to find gameplay footage then look for a suitable location that looks similar to my chosen clip, that may be a problem. Also depending on how long it went on it may become boring for the viewer.

2. My second advert idea starts off with a girl playing on her PlayStation in her room with the lights off. As shes getting angry at the game she throws down the controller on the floor. A black hole appears on the screen, she is intrigued by this and gingerly moves closer to see what it is, but before you know it she is sucked into the screen and the only this left behind is a controller. She gets up off the floor and looks around as she has been teleported into what appears to be the game she was playing just moments ago. The advantages with this idea is that it will be entertaining for the viewer to watch and lets me be a bit more creative with what i do, the downside is that it might take a lot of work especially if i have to learn to use special effects.

3. My third idea starts off with a family talking in the living room, everyone is there but the son. The son is upstairs playing on his play station, when his mam comes in and tells him he has to go downstairs to talk to the rest of the family that has visited. Once all the family are sat round the table that father says he has to go to the toilet, and walks off leaving the family. A couple of hours go by and the son is now allowed to go play on his play station, but when he walks in his room, he finds his dad sat there already playing on it.  I like this idea because it is quite a funny story but also this sort of thing is done quite a lot in adverts,

Final idea
The idea i think i will go with is going to be the second one where the girl is sat playing and she ends up inside a video game, i am going with this idea for a few reasons. I feel like this option will be able to test my ability to film and edit, this is because of the amount o research i will have to do a lot of research into Adobe After Effects so that i can find out what i need to do

Strengths

The idea i think i will go with is going to be the second one where the girl is sat playing and she ends up inside a video game, i am going with this idea for a few reasons. The first one is that i feel like this option will be a test for me and to try something new, as i have never worked with special effects before, so this is an opportunity to grow as a filmmaker. The strengths of this idea is that it will keep the viewer interested and focused on whats going on. Plus the idea its self isn't one that you see often, and if it is filmed and edited to a good standard then i think it will turn out to be very good.

Weaknesses

This might be a hard one to do, as i will have to learn quite a few skills along the way. For example i will have to learn new software like adobe after effects to be able for it to look more professional. Other than that i cant think of any other weaknesses for this project.

Opportunities

As i mentioned before there are quite a lot of opportunities that can come from doing this project. The biggest thing i will gain from this is experience. For example in the future, if a job ever comes up were i need to know how to use adobe after effects, then i will be able to, because i did my research about it. Also if it does end up being a good finished product i can use it in my portfolio which i can then show off the skills i learned whilst filming and editing.

Threats

There are a couple of obstacles that i will have to face on the way, and one of them is the location which the girl teleports to. This is an issue because i was wanting to make the background look like its a video game, but i will only be able to make i look realistic in certain locations so finding one that fits the criteria might be difficult. Also i need to actually find someone who owns a play station 4 as i currently don't know anyone who has one.

Target Audience

The target audience age for the PlayStation advert will be between 12 and 25. I have picked this age because most people who play video games are most likely to be teenagers or people in their mid 20's. My target age is also the same for the PlayStation 4 released by Sony. They said that their console was for people "Typically in their mid to late twenties, single and predominately male. Gaming is their primary leisure activity (10 hours or more a week)". My target audience will most likely play other video game consoles like the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox. This is because the people who buy a PlayStation 4 will most likely have had experience with gaming before, so they are going to want to upgrade from their old consoles.

Critical approaches

Demographics

Demographics is a study based on factors like age, sex and race etc. Most large companies use demographics in order to determine how to market their product. If there product is designed for a specific group then they will need to know what will attract customers.

Psychographics

Phychographics are similar to demographics, but rather than looking at data it looks at why the customer buys it whilst demographics looks at who buys it. Phychographics looks at social class and locations, for example Oasis: Supersonic which comes out soon will be aimed for people in there late 30's early 40's as they were teenagers when Oasis started, so it will be more appealing to them rather than someone who wasn't born yet.

A
higher managerial, administrative or professional
Company director

B
intermediate managerial, administrative or professional
Middle manager

C1
supervisory, clerical, junior administrative or professional
Bank clerk

C2
skilled manual workers
Plumber

D
semi- and unskilled manual workers
Labourer

E
state pensioners with no other income, widows, casual and lowest grade earners
Unemployed

Geodemographics

Geodemographics is the study and grouping of the people in a geographical area. For example Oasis: Supersonic which comes out soon will be aimed a bit more to people from Manchester as that where they are from and the film is set.

Socio-economic status

NRS social grading

NRS is a system that puts occupations into a category

Assassins creed

The target audience for assassins creed is 18 to 30 as you have to be 18 to play the game as it contains a lot of violence, and people after 30 don't really play games that often stereotypically. People who are younger than 18 might still play the game but the game originally is aimed at 18+. The game will be aimed at men more as men tend to like violent games more than women do, although there are women that do still play the game even if it is not aimed at them. For the economic groups it will be aimed to the social grade C1 and below, the C1 grade contains jobs like bank clerks and administrates, the jobs below C1 are jobs like plumbers and unemployed people as the higher people like company directors wont have much time to play games.

The Martian

The target audience for the martian is people 16+ as people under 16 will get bored easily

Working to a brief

Structure of briefs

Contractual

A contractual brief is a legal document which is created between the employee and the client. It describes the things that will be required by the company and how the company organises their work. The brief is clear and easy to read with strict guidelines and parameters set by the client, if the brief was not easy to read then the company could get confused in what the client is looking for. An example of a contractual brief would be actor with a company as the actor would be legally bound to do whatever they agreed to do on the contract. There can be good and bad points with contractual briefs, an advantage to this type of brief is that there is a guarantee of the agreed parameters for both parties of the contract, this ensures that neither of the parties can breach this without legal consequences. But a disadvantage is that once the brief is done you can not go back and change things.

Negotiated

A negotiated brief is where the client and the employee will come to specific agreements upon the project itself, they will trade ideas until they come up with a final idea for the project. It is important that the employee and the client make a decision and agree on the brief as it can cause problems in the long run if someone doesn't agree with something. The advantages of a negotiated brief is that it brings both parties ideas together which will make a stronger relationship between the client and the company, this will also make the client more comfortable so that they can openly talk about what they want in their project. The disadvantage with this however is that they may come to disagreements whilst making the brief, this may result in the employer loosing work if they don't finally agree with something.

Formal

A formal brief is a very detailed document that explains exactly what the client wants so that the company can clearly see the brief without any confusion. The brief is very open and only gives enough information to be able to produce the product, any issues or or information that the media company would like to go over can be discussed during the negotiations with the client. The advantages of a formal brief is that they are very easy to read which helps the client understand the different aspects of the brief. Another advantage is that the contract can not be changed which means you don't have to look at any other ideas but the ones on the brief, this is helpful as it means you have to do more research than you need to and there are no distractions. Even though the fact you can not change the brief is sometimes a good thing it can also be a disadvantage as if there was something that you wanted to change then you wouldn't be able to as the brief is non negotiable, this can lead to a fall out between the employer and the client.

Informal

A informal brief is very similar to a negotiated brief in the way that they include a discussion between the employer and the client, its set out like a meeting so that they can cover most things that they need to discuss. An informal brief doesn't include and contract or documents, but the brief has to appeal to the company before they actually go through with it. When they discuss the brief it means that there are no strings attached and can be changed anytime, the finishing date for the project can be set at any point as well which makes things a lot easier. The advantages of an informal brief is that there are no strings attached so if you change your mind about something all you have to do is discuss it with the employer and if they agree then you can go a head with the idea. A normal meeting would consist of rules and regulations that you have to follow, and going through all this can be time consuming. As with a informal brief it can be quick and easy. There are quite a few disadvantages with using this brief, the more serious one if the fact that it can be really unreliable. Because nothing is written in a contract, the company could go against what the client wants as it is not legally binded.

Commission

A commission brief is when a company hires a separate independent media company to create a product for them coming, finding there own research, proposals and ideas for the product which is then looked at by the commissioner. The advantages that come from this is that the independent company gets paid for doing there bit as well as having a chance to get a share in profits that the media company make. The company also profit from this as seen as though they have a independent company making the project, this gives the company a chance to sort out other projects they have on the go. This can be a downside at the same time as the company doesn't get such an active role in the decision making, so they could end up with something very different from what they had in mind originally. Also because you have so many people working for you on this project, you wont get much of a profit as most of it is going to investors and share holders.

Tender

A tender brief is basically were you advertise and publish a advert showing that they need a product to be made. Production company's will pitch or send in their brief and adaptations to what the client is wanting the try. They show things like the estimated cost and how the product may be produced. It is then left to the client to decide on who they want to go with. The good thing about using this type of brief is that the client has access to quite a few different ideas that have been submitted by people, so you have a lot of work with. The downside is only really for the companies as when they submit their ideas, they are not guaranteed a job.

Cooperative

A cooperative brief is when two or more companies are hired by the same client to work on the same brief. Once both the companies have received the brief they can work on the project together to come up with a final product. If there is any dispute between either of the companies then they can make a negotiable brief. Having this brief means there can be more ideas going into it and other people might see mistakes that others don't, so its always handy having more than one eye on a project at a time. Unfortunately this brief can lead to arguments between either of the companies as each one of them will want to put their ideas down first.

Competition

A competition brief is as simple as it sounds, companies take part in completing the brief that is set and the company with the best finished product wins. The chosen project is then published by the company. This is very similar to a tender brief in the way it is advertised and certain companies have to fight for the job, but with a tender brief you only have to sell your ideas to them, whereas with this you have to actually make the project. The advantages of this is that you get to see the finished products and choose the one you think is best, all you have to do is give the company the prize which is usually money, this can work out cheaper than any other way. The downside again is for the people actually making the projects as loads of people could participate but in the end only one company is going to win, so that leaves everyone else with worthless projects.

Reading a brief

It is very important that you read through the brief, as if you are doing a project and don't read the brief, you are most likely going to do the whole thing wrong and not to the clients liking. Doing this could result in you not getting paid for the work you have done. The nature of the brief basically explains what they want in their product, but is not demanded to be done. Briefs don't have to straight up say what they want in their product, they can talk about things that would be nice or the problems they face with existing projects, on which you would look at the faults and make them better in the new project. Furthermore, the demand of the product is things that the company want you to include for example if a client wants you to interview workers then that is a highly prioritized over other things that weren't demanded.

Negotiating a brief

It is highly important to discuss things with your client before you start your production, this gives the employer the chance to ask question about the brief in regards to the project. By adding discretion to your work, you will be able to complete the work to the best of your ability without any pressures from the client who will want to know how the project is coming along constantly, which may distract the employer from finishing the project on time. Sometimes the client will ask for something that you may not agree with and don't think you should include it into the project, if you think that what they have asked for is morally wrong then you don't have to do it. You can loose work because of this though, or they will allow you not to include it so they don't get a bad reputation. When making a project the employer and client will go through any ethical issues in the brief and check for any legal problems for example if something is copyrighted then it can not be used in the final product. Sometimes you will have to make amendments to the final product so that the client is happy, once the product is finished you can send it to the client and get some feedback if they have anything they want to change. Although its best to put a limit on how many times you can re send it as sometimes people only give one problem with it at a time so you end up having to send it back loads. Amendments to the budget can also happen if you need to go slightly over budget for something. If you run out of money for the project you can ask for funding off of an investor if he likes the idea of the project, this can help but a certain part of the shares will have to go to the investor once published. Sometimes it might be best to change the conditions, as if you have a project on the go you don't want the client to dictate everything that happens as you might have some better ideas than the client does.

Opportunities
Self development is very important when completing a project as it enables them to be more confident when it comes to future projects. It is often that you will get a brief were there is stuff included that you have never done before, doing this will give you new skills and achievements in which you did not have beforehand. The finished product will resemble the new skills that you learned and will advertise that you can work in that area. As well as learning new skills, briefs will sometimes ask for quite a few things that use a lot of different skills, so once you build up a lot of skills then work will become much easier, and quality will become much better. In a brief the client will be mentioning lots of their own views and opinions, they will expect you to voice your own opinions as well, rather than letting them dictate everything that happens as you have more of a professional mind set than the client.
